UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Hawai’i donates $10,000 to support development of a community health center in Wahiawa

HONOLULU (Aug. 27, 2012) – UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Hawai’i has donated $10,000 to FACE (Faith Action for Community Equity) to support the development of a community health center in Wahiawa.

The Wahiawa Center for Community Health (WCCH) will help meet the medical and related needs of the underserved.  The project has generated interest and support from the Wahiawa business community and local care providers, and the Hawaii Primary Care Association is helping to support the project’s development..

“The federal grant awarded last year by the federal government has enabled FACE to lay the foundation for the new Wahiawa Center for Community Health (WCCH), and these funds will help to continue the work of making the center a reality,” said Mary Talon, President of the Board of Directors of the WCCH and FACE leader.

“UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Hawai’i is grateful for the opportunity to continue its partnership with FACE and provide funding on this very worthwhile effort.  The Wahiawa Center for Community Health will help provide needed services to the underserved as well as QUEST and QExA members,” said Dave Heywood, Vice President of UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Hawai’i.

Faith Action for Community Equity (FACE) is the only statewide non-profit interfaith community organizing group in Hawaii.  Founded in 1996, our membership is presently made up of 29 institutions on Oahu, 24 on Maui and one statewide.  There are 38 churches, 1 Buddhist temple, 2 Jewish congregations, 10 community groups and non-profit organizations, and one labor union.  In September, 2011 FACE was awarded a HRSA Planning Grant to assess the need for a Community Health Center in Wahiawa.

Wahiawa Community Health Center Project

The Wahiawa Center for Community Health (WCCH) was recently granted status as an IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and  are now well positioned to begin work establishing a new Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Wahiawa.  WCCH is now at the point to be able to begin activities necessary to establishing the new WCCH as an FQHC and setting up the facilities, staffing, operations and all of the tasks necessary to serve the people of Wahiawa.
