COVID-19 Response in Texas

Nearly 4 million Medicaid enrollees in Texas are covered through Managed Care Organizations. That’s almost 94% of the total Medicaid population in Texas. These enrollees include children, mothers, grandparents and people with disabilities – all of whom have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. 

To show our commitment to the communities we serve during the public health crisis UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Texas:

   Donated and distributed:

  • 150,000 reusable cloth masks to members and community partners including food banks, homeless shelters, FQHCs, and community agencies.
  • More than 950 blankets to residents of senior centers in Austin, Baytown, Beaumont, Houston, Huntsville and Waco.

   Provided:

  • Health Care for the Homeless in Houston with $100k grant to support immediate needs for local health care for the homeless programs and longer-term needs to expand capacity. This grant was made possible by the United Health Foundation’s pledge of $2.5M to National Healthcare for the Homeless.
  • Members in our Housing First program with reliable food and medical supplies. Housing First serves our most socially and medically complex members facing homelessness. 

   Awarded:

  • Community-based organizations in Texas with $690K in COVID-19 related Empowering Health grants (1 million total)  to expand access to care and address the social determinants of health for uninsured individuals and underserved communities impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
    • Houston Food Bank (Houston) - $120k
    • Heal the City (Panhandle and Amarillo) - $150k
    • South Plains Food Bank (Western Texas - Lubbock) - $175K
    • Proyecto Juan Diego (The Valley- Brownsville) - $120K
    • Lone Star Circle of Care (Central Texas – Houston) - $95K
    • Wellmed Charitable Foundation – (statewide) - $30K

Deployed: 

  • A targeted incentive model to help Community Health Centers expand capacity to address needs of their patients and community as a result of the shifting environment due to the coronavirus pandemic. 
    • 19 FQHC partners received over $2M in funding to implement innovative programming to best support the members of the communities we serve through telehealth implementation or expansion, COVID-19 testing and tracing and other initiatives focused on preventing and containing the spread of the illness. 

Accelerated: 

  • Nearly $120M in claims payments to care providers to help with COVID-19 financial challenges. This action applies to both in-and out-of-network medical and behavioral care providers across our Medicare Advantage, Medicaid and Individual and Group Market health plans.
