National FQHC Advisory Board Member Spotlight: Brian Toomey

Brian Toomey joined Piedmont Health Services, Inc. (PHS) as its Chief Executive Officer in 2005.  Working with the PHS Board and staff, the organization has grown significantly under his leadership, and now has over 500 staff with an annual operating budget of over $70 million.  In his tenure at PHS, Mr. Toomey has spearheaded efforts that support the PHS mission, high quality health care, and organizational financial security.  He has focused most on: 1) expanding health center services to more individuals needing access to primary care (PHS now annually serves over 47,000 patients at 10 health center sites with more than 110,000 medical visits, 25,000 dental visits, and 300,000 prescriptions); 2) development of two Piedmont Health SeniorCare sites, the area’s first Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE); and 3) fostering significant community partnerships to work collaboratively around care of underserved populations, including the Carolina HealthNet program with UNC Health Care, and work with several local Chambers of Commerce to provide access to care for both small business owners and employees.  He has served two-terms as Chairman of the NC Community Health Center Association.  He is the recipient of the inaugural Robert J. Greczyn, Jr. Community Health Center Leadership Award (2010), the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work (2012), and is an elected member of the National Association of Community Health Center Grassroots Hall of Fame (2014).
