Removing medication adherence barriers in Mississippi

In 2019, UnitedHealthcare and Genoa Healthcare launched a Meds to Beds program in Mississippi to help members struggling with behavioral health diagnoses and other complex chronic health conditions. Through the Meds to Beds program members can get their prescription medications in an inpatient setting prior to being discharged. Historically, individuals would need to coordinate a trip to the pharmacy after leaving the hospital, but the Meds to Beds program removes extra steps and is an easy solution for Medicaid members experiencing transportation barriers. The option for bedside delivery became even more important during the COVID-19 pandemic while individuals were being asked to lessen their travel.

Through the Meds to Beds program, a Consumer Medication Coordinator (CMC) is assigned to healthcare facilities to serve as a liaison between the facility and pharmacy - the CMC works with the pharmacy to package the individual’s medication and deliver it to their bed before they return home. CMCs are available to answer any questions that a member may have about their medication empowering them with the knowledge and confidence needed to adhere to their prescription recommendations.

One of the leading causes of hospital readmission is non-compliance with medication and the Meds to Beds program is designed to drive medication adherence, decrease readmission rates and create an environment where individuals can thrive in their community.
