LTSS and managed care: Emergency care management

When a member receiving long-term services and supports (LTSS) needs emergency care or hospitalization, managing that care and any follow-up services can make a significant impact on member experience and health outcomes.

While fee-for-service models create an environment where care providers may not have immediate access to the full patient record, managed care can help create a smoother care experience. This is especially important for those with complex health needs.

When emergency care is required, managed long-term services and supports (MLTSS) provides:

  • More efficient communication with the care team
  • Better coordination of care, including follow-up and wraparound services and supports
  • Consistent care quality
  • Whole-person care
