National FQHC Advisory Board Member Spotlight: Marlen Trujillo

Dr. Marlen Trujillo is the Chief Executive Officer of the Spring Branch Community Health Center (SBCHC), a non-profit community health center that provides low-cost healthcare, social and educational services. Ms. Trujillo was one of the community leaders on the founding Board of the community-based health center in 2003.

In May 2004, the community health center was opened in the Spring Branch area, in West Houston Texas, to target the Medically Underserved Population and help reduce healthcare disparities by increasing access to affordable quality health care. The community health center was deemed as a Federally Qualified Health Center in 2005. In recent years, the organization has experienced a population explosion which has increased the need for additional healthcare services in the West Houston area. Currently the organization has 6 locations and one mobile health clinic serving 20,000 individuals in need.

Dr. Trujillo joined the UnitedHealthcare FQHC National Advisory Board (FQHC Board) in 2016 hoping she and the other board members could collectively use their experience, “Providing healthcare services to a diverse population of individuals living in medically underserved areas across the nation to provide insight into the needs of these communities to shape UnitedHealthcare’s strategy and approach.”

When asked about the value of the FQHC Board Dr. Trujillo stated, “This insight allows us to steer our day-to-day operations toward our common goal of increasing access to healthcare and building a healthier community for all.”

Discussions during the pandemic have been especially helpful to Dr. Trujillo and her colleagues at Spring Branch Community Health Center as they think about how to best support individuals with chronic conditions in the new landscape.
