Integrating traditional Hawaiian healing with primary care

Rooted in Hawaiʻi’s rich history, traditional Hawaiian healing methods are used to restore balance and support holistic health. UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Hawaiʻi collaborates with Waimānalo Health Center, a local Federally Qualified Health Center, to offer traditional healing to members as a value-added benefit. Waimānalo Health Center takes an integrated approach by pairing traditional healing practices with primary care.

The program began as a 24-month pilot, which demonstrated the following outcomes:

  • 51% reduction in emergency department visits
  • 29% decrease in per-member-per-month costs
  • 74% reduction in inpatient care costs

The pilot program tracked health measures like blood pressure and A1C levels, in addition to holistic measures like patients’ self-reported pain level.
