Despite continued medical advancements in the United States, racial disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes persist.

In response, Providence Swedish, the largest nonprofit health care provider in the greater Seattle area, launched the JUST Birth Network for doulas who support birthing people who are Black or Indigenous. The network helps improve and expand access to doula care services and makes doulas an integral part of a pregnant individual’s birthing team.

In this video, Jin Tsuchiya, Regional Policy Director, UnitedHealthcare Community & State, and Nwando Anyaoku, MD, MPH, MBA, Vice President, Chief Health Equity Officer, Providence Swedish Health Services, discuss how health systems can advance birth equity through culturally congruent doula care.
