Improving maternal care access in rural New Mexico

Ensuring the health of women and children is essential to building strong, thriving communities. In New Mexico, the need for accessible maternal and infant health care is especially urgent: about one in four women in the state receive inadequate prenatal care.1 Access is particularly challenging in rural communities, where some women must travel over an hour and a half to reach the nearest birthing hospital.

To help close these gaps, the United Health Foundation, the philanthropic foundation of United Health Group, recently announced a $1.5M grant to support expanded access to care through La Clinica de Familia, a Federally Qualified Health Center in southern New Mexico.

In this video conversation, Dr. Denise Leonardi, Medical Director at UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of New Mexico, speaks with Dr. Stephanie Peace, OB/GYN and Director of the Women’s Health Center at La Clinica de Familia, about how cross-sector collaboration is helping to close gaps in care.
