Innovative tech-driven solution brings virtual care to rural Texas

Access to health care can be a challenge in rural communities, where residents often face limited provider availability, geographic isolation and transportation barriers. To address these longstanding issues, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Texas is investing in OnMed CareStations, innovative, high-tech kiosks that deliver virtual care in a private and accessible setting.1 This initiative launched in several communities across the state, with units now available in Bruni, Corsicana, Fort Worth, McAllen, Milam and Missouri City.

The OnMed CareStations are equipped with advanced diagnostic tools, real-time imaging capabilities and vital sign monitoring, enabling clinicians to perform comprehensive exams remotely. By leveraging this cutting-edge technology, UnitedHealthcare is working to remove logistical barriers and ensure that individuals can receive timely, high-quality care, right where they are.

OnMed CareStations

The OnMed CareStations are designed for ease of use and clinical efficiency. The experience begins when a patient initiates a session by pressing “start.”2 A live nurse practitioner appears on a 65-inch screen to guide the appointment, which takes place in real time. As the patient stands in the booth, the CareStation uses integrated thermal scanning and biometric sensors to automatically capture information such as weight.

From the clinician’s “command center,” a suite of remote diagnostic tools can be deployed. These include a high-definition camera to examine skin concerns, a digital stethoscope that patients can hold to their chest and other equipment that enables accurate, remote clinical evaluations. Following the visit, the clinician can provide a diagnosis, transmit health records, send e-prescriptions to a local pharmacy and offer referrals to specialists, if needed. After each appointment, ultraviolet light technology sanitizes the station, ensuring a clean and safe environment for the next user.

Enhancing virtual care across Texas

By supporting a flexible and scalable solution, the health plan is enhancing access to virtual care and improving health outcomes for individuals who may otherwise go without care due to geographic or logistical constraints. As a self-contained unit that supports real-time clinical visits and biometric data collection, it serves as a blueprint for transforming the traditional care delivery model.

By improving access with technology-driven, cost-effective solutions, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Texas is working to better serve rural communities. The launch of the OnMed CareStations across the state represents a transformative solution for health care deserts, offering Texans immediate access to real-time video consultations with licensed clinicians.
